PRECIOUS CARGO (Secret Mission E.G.G.) – Caroline Galderisi

For our next Space and Materiality assignment, we were asked to deliver our professor an egg via UPS, Fed-Ex or USPS. The egg must safely return back to him in one piece, in a safe and creative way. I began to plan methods of delivery, and things that would keep the egg safe.

I started thinking about the items I already had in my house, such as an avocado, a pillow or a ball of yarn. I noticed the shape of the avocado and the pit itself looked like an egg, but a little smaller. This was my top idea until I realized it would probably rot in the mail. I decided to go with the ball of yarn or “yarn nest” and place the egg in the middle

I left the top open for room to breathe, lined the bottom and sides with bubble wrap my Dad had in the house, and along with that, filled the rest of the empty space with leftover plastic bags.

At this point in the assignment, I had started thinking of making this into an interactive piece.

How would I do this?

Delivering anything fragile from point A to B, taking risks and getting creative reminded me of none other than James Bond or Mission Impossible movies. The innovative and often risky tasks that spies have to do are exhilarating. I thought not only would it be comedic to turn this assignment into a spy mission, but it also goes against a lot of the previous work I have done that is deep, melancholy and personalized. I like making changes in my work, and it shows that I can grow and change ideas.

I decorated the outside of the box and made my own shipping label digitally.

The mission I created:

THE SECRET MISSION E.G.G. –

Agent #003:

As I made my way out of the HQ on 1st Avenue, Manhattan, I was prepared to deliver the object safely to agent #009.

I had to be stealthy; the package would arrive the next morning at 10:30 am. I couldn’t let the enemy agents find out what I was possibly delivering from the HQ. The much sought after E.G.G. device. Agent #009 will then confirm the condition of the object once it has landed at secret location B.
