Space/ Materiality: Haptic Project – IN PROCESS

Spontaneity drives most of the art that I create, so after receiving instruction to ‘construct doodles in space’, I knew immediately that this project was going to further benefit me, and my creative process. In class, I was slightly intimidated by the feat of creating an entire sculpture, but after realizing how innovative and appropriate this project is, I began to draw inspiration from some of my favorite artists and go to work immediately.

 

Not only does this abstract prompt allow new students to begin learning how to work in 3-D space, but the limitations on materials engraves a sense of resourcefulness into young artists – which will be extremely useful tough out our years as artists.

 

 

During the construction process, I found the dovetail technique of binding the pieces of cardboard together to be both beneficial, and meticulous. After cutting the slot too big, to many times, I figured that the procedure was way too detail-oriented to eye-ball the slots, and began marking them with pencil. This also allowed me to play with the angles at which I cut the dovetail in, without messing up the entire shape.

Now that I have finished, I really couldn’t be happier with where I am. Playing with empty space was captivating, and experimenting with silhouette and form was an extremely enjoyable experience. I’m excited to see where we go from here, as we add on embroidery thread and wire…
