Hommage to Frank Loyd Wright

As the son of an architect, I have been surrounded by blueprints, books on architecture, and works of art either by, or inspired by famous architects throughout history. My father was heavily inspired by Frank Loyd Wright in college, and implemented his designs within his own. His inspiration inadvertently flowed into mine, and I can thank Frank Loyd Wright for my minimalist eye to line, color, and shape. While I love FLW’s works in architecture and sculpture, I am mostly intrigued by his drawings. I say this, because his exploration in tone and shape is like no other before him, and he inspires me to create something new  like he did. Because of this, I would like to pay homage to Frank Loyd Write in form of a series of three 5′ x 5′ drawings, not replicating, but mimicking the techniques that Write practiced and held so close to his heart.

For this assignment, I want to think like Frank Loyd Wright. I want to embody his vision of ‘complexity through simplicity’ and create a series of three drawings – size undetermined – and simply try to mimic Wright’s iconic style. Each drawing will feature a distinct tone/ color and will push me to think even more simply then I have in the past. I know that this is going to be hard for me, but I really want to maintain that thought of complexity while executing this project.

MY WORK

Through this project, I wanted to pay homage to Frank Lloyd Write and mimic his minimalistic style by creating my very own geometric drawings, like he did. With these drawings, I was able to not only explore color and various tones of color, but I got to see how hard these drawings actually are! Even though they look like simple drawings, the complexity comes in while deciding how to keep the composition clean and organized without being cle-che or boring.
