Futuristic Mosque – Sancaklar Mosque

This reformed mosque with its open robust but yet industrial structure invites us to discover this special space. Constructed out of grey brick stone and glass it gives us the feeling of an ancient building, this might be also due to the place it was constructed. The mosque lays on a prairie landscape on the outskirts of Istanbul, it could be assimilated to Stonehenge. The mosque distances itself from the traditional Muslim architecture of religious spaces, reforming Muslim architecture. High walls surround the religious space creating a calm and peaceful atmosphere. It feels like the walls are protecting the space from the chaos of the outer world. The long tower stretching out of the compound draws believers of the faith in, as it is the only building that can be seen from the outside. The building blends in perfectly with the landscape, it almost seems like it’s part of nature.

The interior of the mosque reminds one of a simple cave, its dramatic lighting and the black walls with arabic writing gives the space a futuristic look. The structure repeatedly  reflects the connection between manmade and nature.
