– What materials did you use and how?
For this project we were assigned to visually create our partners fear into a wearable paper garment. I chose to create a mask. For this project I used thick white chip board, printed out photographs, glue and staples.
– What form or forms did the project result in? Be specific and descriptive.
The project resulted in a wearable mask that is worn like a hat and covers her face completely.
– What was the context of the work? Where did it or should it exist: the home, art gallery, public space, magazine?
My partners biggest fear was being a disappointment to herself and to her family. She really wants to succeed and make her family proud. I created a mask because her fear is in her head and its not an actual physical fear. I wanted her parents to be placed on top of her head because they are the most important and are always on her mind. For the front piece, I decided to combine one of my inspiration photos with a photo of her. The inspiration photo is a photo from Delirious: Art at limits of Reason by Ana Mendieta. The model within the inspiration photo is extremely non traditional as the face looks like its pressed against glass. It really stood out to me because of the emotion it portrays. I combined her photo with the inspiration photo because I feel like her feelings reflect the emotion the inspiration photo is showing. This piece should belong in a home because if she has it in her room it will always remind her to face her fears and remember to work hard. The photos of her family on the top of the mask can be inspirational when she looks at the piece.
– What are the overall ideas of the work?
The main idea of this work is to visually represent Elisabed’s fear of disappointing her parents out of paper.
– Does this work remind you of anything you’ve seen? Can you describe
I have seen collages before of cutting strips of photos and collaging them together however I have never seen this method placed on a mask.
– Who / what are your influences?
My biggest influence was Elisabed, without her to really describe her fear I would not be able to create a thorough concept. My artist influence was Ana Mendieta’s Delirious: Art at limits of Reason.
– How would you redo or continue this work in the future (say, if you had more time or unlimited resources)?
Grayce, this project is so compelling! I love all of the layers and your close attention to detail about conveying your partner’s feelings. The references to Ana Mendieta are great. I wonder if you’re familiar with the “Sound Suits” of Nick Cave? Or the early work of Rebecca Horn? I look forward to seeing your projects develop this semester! – Audra
