Annotations: Barthes (Seminar)

 — Write down (in your own words!) what the main argument is and have this sentence

ready to be read in class.

A myth is commonly mistaken for an old story or a legend, however not all stories and legends have an underlying motivation element within them. A myth must have an aspect that motivates the person. A myth can come in any form or depiction however there are three main components that make up a myth.

— Write 4 to 5 more sentences that paraphrase the article as a whole.

The article deconstructs what a myth is as it describes in detail each part. Within the beginning of the article it states very clearly that a myth can be anything written, spoken, or photographed. Each contains a signifier, the signified and the sign. The first piece is the signifier and gives a contextual background and plot to the myth. The second piece is the signified which is a mental idea doesn’t need to by a physical thing. Finally the last piece is the sign of motivation. This is a concept that will inspire the person to do something. Overall myths are very complicated stories of encouragement.

— Choose one quote that you find really important; write it down, and write a 1-sentence

comment explaining why you have chosen it

Myth hides nothing and flaunts nothing: it distorts: myth is neither a lie nor a confession: it is an inflection.

I chose this because I think that this is a good summarizing statement that really defines what a myth is. What the sentence is stating is that a myth is something that is changed and that will change people’s thoughts in the form of a story.
