Genius Grant Project Work In Progress

In Turkey there were at least 10 Syrian kids on every big street begging for money or sitting on the corner trying to sell something. Not knowing the language they could not communicate but the signs they hold in their hands… I have seen dozens of people in small boats about to leave the deck to go to Greece. Boats are not capable of carrying that many people and they struggle to keep it still… There are unofficial refugee camps all over the place, everyday on my ride to school I had to cross from the middle of one. However the further you get from the problem the less people are aware.

  • Tony Matelli is the artist of the sculpture on the Highline. I was scared when I first saw it. It is so realistic and disturbing. We can put a sculpture boat full of refugees on Battery Park, or a child begging for money from the crossing cars to a side of 5th Ave. made by Tony Matelli. IN order to raise awareness. Images  of how it should look like can be created or real people could be placed on streets to act like the sculpture before the project to illustrate how it can be with the grand.
  • Postcards are generally with happy images, many are with landmarks on them. However, images of refugees  can be putted on these landmark images and they can be printed as postcards to make a contrast. The postcards can be sold, displayed or even given as a promotion on gift shops when customers get other postcards. They can be a reminder that people can actually hold in their hands.
