Artist Statement :

The first garment that, a black & white plaid skort by Brandy Melville, I chose was from my own closet; my teacher mentioned that it is more fulfilling to use garments from your personal wardrobe after going through the process I have to agree. The second garment, a red zip-up hoodie by Fila, I thrifted from Goodwill.

The fabric of Garment I is a soft black & white plaid, semi-stretchy, material while the material of Garment II is a red sweatshirt material, most likely a cotton-synthetic blend.

I think the most challenging part of this project was figuring out how to work the industrial sewing machine & sewing darts into the front and back of the garment.

The most time-consuming part of the project by far was recreating the final garment out of the pattern from Garment I & the material from Garment II. The process took me about six hours to complete and I had to pick apart and resew sections various sections many times due to an uneven seam or the industrial machine getting jammed.

I think the most enjoyable part of the project by far was seeing the final product and feeling proud about what I had accomplished on my first run of making a garment.

The part of the project/process that I am most satisfied with is knowing that I have gained the skill of working with the industrial sewing machine so that it may be easier for me to work with it in the future on projects, both personal & school related.

I was most surprised by how much I enjoyed this project. I thought that at some point I might begin to find it tedious but every step in the process kept me both engaged and fueled with energy as I have never been before.

Something I learned about myself through this project is that I can be quite the perfectionist when it comes to using the sewing machines. I think the reason it took me so long to make the garment once all the pieces had been cut out was that every time a stitch was crooked or something didn’t come together properly I would unstitch it and do over again and again until it met my expectation.

This project changed the way I think about design because it made me realize that fashion design is something that truly engages me like no other area of design. I think about it as a friend rather than a sneering monster that is too good for me. I always thought I would never be good enough or creative enough to study fashion design but this project has boosted my confidence in myself and made me realize that designing clothes is not as scaring as it may seem and is probably one of the most personal forms of self-expression.
