FASHION Studio : Fabric in Fashion at the FIT Museum

Sketches :

Garment I :

The first artifact (pictured above on the left) caught my eye the moment I walked into the gallery. I practically ran to it to snap a picture. The fabric fell perfectly over the mannequins form and I was taken in by the femininity and delicacy of the entire design. It shines almost metallic in the light due to its being made of rayon which can be, as the plack below it states, “treated to mimic silk, cotton, or wool.” It also highlights that due to being made of this material the garment would have been more affordable than one of pure silk. “White rayon satin evening jacket and dress” such a drab name for such an, in my opinion, exquisite garment. The “evening jacket” is collared but not structured and ties at the divot between the collarbones with a delicate bow. A simple band around the waist so as to accentuate the figure of an otherwise flowing floor-length dress. The sleeves are 3/4, loose, and tied in another relaxed bow around the forearm. This gown and matching evening jacket articulate beauty in a sensual and timeless manner.

Garment II :

The second artifact (pictured above on the right) juxtaposes & compliments the other perfectly; the curation of the show is impeccable. It is a “black cellophane-faced wool knit evening suit,” as the plack below it states and is paired with a simple white button-up shirt beneath the jacket and tucked into the skirt. This piece shimmers as though it were fabricated out of the night sky, I expect this is due to the cellophane; “cellophane is a cellulose-based, water-repellent film invented by Swiss chemist Jacques E. Brandenberger in 1912.” The two pieces do not highlight the figure of the wearer but are modest and box-like in their coverage of the body with a high collar and large relaxed bow at the divot between the collarbones. The sleeves of the jacket reach just above the wrists and the skirt just above the ankles; the whole ensemble gives the aura of a modest and sophisticated woman.

Comparison :

The two garments are both stunning on their own and paired together juxtapose & compliment each other perfectly; even the mannequins are in opposing colours but with the same positioning. The first is sensual and simple while the other is modest and simple; however, both are delicate, feminine, and classically beautiful.

**I forgot to take a selfie at the museum – I am bringing a pamphlet that I picked up from the exhibition to class.
