Bridge 1 – Seminar- Manifesto of the Space

Person 3 write up :

For this project, we were all placed into groups and given a theme of; 1) Space of Freedom; 2) Space of Joy; 3) Space of Solidarity; 4) Space of Power. My group was given the theme of Solidarity and we all knew the term but all questioned if we all had the same definition of the word or not so we looked up the definition to make sure. What we found as a definition was; “Unity or agreement of feeling or action, especially among individuals with a common interest; mutual support within a group.”

Once we figured out what direction we wanted to go in, which was building a public park, we were discussing what we needed to place in the park to support the theme of solidarity. We liked the idea of having the park centered around a fountain with a centerpiece about solidarity. A known symbol for solidarity is an arm raised with a fist but we wanted a more welcoming centerpiece for the fountain and something that really represented the definition of solidarity. So we decided to really focus on the definition of “Mutual support within a group.” and wanted to design a centerpiece with people in a group holding hands representing the meaning of supporting each other.

The next aspect we wanted to include was a gazebo so there could be a meeting place for groups to hang out or gather. Why we decided to do this was because this would be a place in the park that had a cover over it so if there is bad weather this place in the park could still be used. The next aspect we wanted was for the park to be more in an open space rather than have it gated off so it didn’t feel like it was trying to exclude anyone.  And lastly, we made the landscape more open by creating steps and/or a seating area out of the ground where anyone can sit anywhere and there isn’t a limit to how many can fit like how a bench is many.
