Bridge 1-1

Introduction:

These photos are taken in MoMA, New York City, and form research on internet., including news and an speech from an artist. My theme for this project is identity. I focus on the difference in skin color in my research since there are still a lot of conflicts happened because of stereotypes or racism. From observation and research, I want to learn how society views this problem and figure out a topic about skin color that I can further do research on.

#1 Photo from the street of New York City:

I took this photo because I think the red poster in the photo is related to my themes as skin colors. Three hands in different colors hold together and form a heart shape. Under the heart, it also comes with the text “ United at Heart”. The heart shape also refers to the Logo of CVS. The poster remains me of the skin color racism in American and all over the world.

Here’s the CVS logo, designed to be a heart shape.

#2 Photo from MOMA:

Bruce Nauman, One Hundred Live and Die, 1984.

I took this photo in MoMa. It is an illumination art which is set on a blank wall with a modulator tube. I first notice the text black, since it won’t be as light as other texts did. However, it still is “Life or Die”. The theme of this artwork impressed me and I think it wants to show the similarity of human life.

#3 Online Research:

Olympia, by Édouard Manet in 1863, Oil on canvas

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympia_(Manet)

I chose this painting because it is related to skin color, which is the theme that I’m interested in. Olympia is an oil on canvas, by Monet. Although the white woman is naked, she looks in a higher class than the black woman did. She looks straight to her front, but the black servant can only look down. It represents the social classes of different skin colors, which related to my theme. It helps me to learn the racism(theme) in history.

#4 Photo from MOMA:

American People Series#20: Die, by Faith Ringgold in 1967

https://www.moma.org/collection/works/199915

I took this photo in MoMa since it is related to skin color. On the canvas, there are women, male, and children, including all gender, all ages, and all skin color. The painting looks bloody and emotional, which remains me of the conflict about gun control in the US. however, there is a young white boy embracing a black girl in the center of the frame. I understand this as that humanity is something above the outside identity.

#5 Photo from the street of New York City:

NICK CAVE, Untitled (detail), 2018, mixed media

http://www.jackshainman.com/artists/nick-cave/

I took this photo in a gallery in Chelsea. I was first attracted by the wood eagle. It makes me think about this country because the eagle is a symbol of the United States. Many heads of black or yellow skin people are placed on the black table surface. Their mood seems heavy. I can tell that these black people live in tortured instead of happiness.

#6 Online Research:

This is a collaboration of photography, and the photo was taken during her Ted talk. Base on my research, I learned that she was inspired by her family since she got all the color among her family members. It remains me about New York City because New York is also a very diverse city.

#7 Online Research:

I found this photo in a new in the New York Times, a sculpture installation displayed in a gallery of human diversity in the Museum of Mankind in Paris. Gene is a key element I think for the physical look. It decides our physical identity, our appearance, even our personality somewhat, which also including my theme skin color. Different skin color is definitely the result of DNA of relevant.

  1. Reflection:
The purpose of this assignment is using 7 images to define the visual culture by own observations. Visual culture is literary everywhere in our life, from advertisement in the street to the artwork in MoMa. When analyzing the images, i can read the image more detailed. In visual culture, every element of the work is meaningful: color choice, size, materials, pattern, etc.It allows me to better understand the purpose of artist/image. I really enjoy to do first hand research by observing. While I was finding elements that related in the street, I can see more than usual, capture stuff that I won’t notice normally.
