Project Deconstruction

This is a soft sculpture by Joyce Zhu. It was a project for Space and Material, created in 2018. It’s a weaving between branches with dyed rope, fabric and wire.

She was inspired by a artist called Moheb Zandi, who did a lots of weaving with mix media and textile art.

Her idea is to combining nature elements through weaving. Therefore, she use a branches from the street, which has three branches, make it easy to weave between. She also combining with other media, like hemp rope, aluminum wire and fabrics made by cotton, yarn, and silk. she states that making art is creating things from the original.

To express the texture of weave, sky , the reflection of light through different textile, she utilized several different kinds of textile: black suit fabric from donation, rope, bed sheet, etc. Each one of them gives a different layer of texture. In order to show the textile, She also weaved  some parts loosely, but some part tightly. For example, on the top where the blue fabric is, the difference between loose and tight give a sense of the cloud, and it looks fluffy.

She also dyed the fabric and rope herself, using acrylic paints which is made of pigment suspend in acrylic polymer emulsion. Since acrylic paint is a kind of fast drying and water-soluble paint, it is suitable for dying. although it is the same paint, on different material, the color come out to be differently. On the fabric, it is sky blue, but on the rope, it is more like a blue-green, since rope absorb the color better. After it dry, the color become lighter.
