Diptych

Introduction:

in this assignmentI explored the topic of gender by making diptychs that with signifer. The signifier I chose for each diptych is screen, body figure, graffiti, text-based, and skull.

Mind Map:

#1

Reflection:

The signifier I chose is skull. I use clay and gold leaves to make two clay skull. In my understanding, human are combinations of bones, muscles, and soil. Muscles are appearance, beauty, and outlooks. Souls are our inner self; but bones are the structure. People could be different with genders, but they are all same as human.

Feedback:

Clay is a really good material for this topic. It looks rough and natural. The text xould be more, so it will stand stronger.

Emma Watson: Gender equality is your issue too

this pair of diptychs is a text-based digital image. the first one is done in InDesign, with the tools in InDesign, I arrange them into the shape of human skulls, and fill it up with Emma Watson’s speech in He for She movement. The second is hand drawn in procreate, including handwritten texts. Inspired by Betty Tompkins, In my work, I combined text with illustration. The text I chose are the appellations for women. Some of them are cute but some might be rude. I identify myself as a woman and I respect my own gender identity as a female.

Feedback:

Comparing with the first one, the second illustration has more influence from Betty Tompkins, because of the handwritten letters. Consider more about text base art, for example collage.

Reflection:

This is a photograph, using a projector and mannequin. the signifier i chose is graffiti. The key element of graffiti is coloring, the strong contrast of colors express the painters feeling. By using the mannequin, I create a shadow on the wall. The different movement expresses a different mod. I want to express my understanding of the conflict between different genders. Although we always support equality, there are still a lot of people suffering because It is hard for people who live in the light to see the dark side of society.

Feedback:

The resolution of the image makes the shadow faded, using a better camera next time. (I only print the shadow instead of the mannequin itself) it is better to show the photograph with the mannequin because it is hard to tell that is a photo instead of a painting.

Reflection:

This is an acrylic painting on wood. The signifier I chose for this diptych is body figure. In art history, there are many artworks with women figure, and many of them are naked especially in Greek art. It is a confirm that women’s body is beautiful, however, it is also an inequality. No matter to an individual or to the entire women community.

Feedback:

The women figure idea is good, but it is hard to connect the painting with my concept. And the color choice should consider more carefully.

Reflection:

This is printmaking and watercolor, postcard size. The signifier is on screen. In daily life, people consider screen as content for information, as these huge screens in time square. Many transgender people are hurt from violence, social criticism, even their families. So they become depressed and not willing to connect themselves to the world. It is actually the wrong way to protecting. By Connecting to the world and express personal identity, transgender people can more be accepted by the world

Feedback:

This is really your staff. It is more crafty than others, and the texture of printmaking is nicely shown, bring in the original piece instead of a printout, and the watercolor is not too conflict to work with printer ink.  The plus sign remains➕ people of medication or heals needed.
