Met Breuer: Delirious / Ettore Sottsass

  1. The picture above is of Yayoi Kusama’s “Ladder”, 1963. It is a mixed media sculpture of a ladder, high heels, and phallic shapes taking over the ladder. It appears to be covered in white paint or a thick plaster of some sort to make all the objects one.
  2. Critics called Kusama’s work “obsessional art”. Something about the sexually charged objects that made it obsessional. I have my own interpretation of the piece. It is in fact a ladder that the heels and phallic shapes cover. I believe its talking about a womans journey up to the top, or to success. Men, getting in the way of this journey and the road to success. Maybe she chose the phallus shape because men tend to be misogynistic and think in a sexual way. Maybe not taking women seriously, or making them a sex object. I think it holds a deeper purpose than just “obsessional art”. I think its making a social statement about maybe her own journey or all womens journey on the road to success/ the top of the ladder.
  3. This art piece appeals to me because I love Kusama’s work and got very excited when I saw one at the museum. I was instantly drawn to this piece because of the way it was singularly the only piece in the room with the dramatic lights gazing upon it. I saw it and really thought it was a social commentary about men belittling women so I wanted to further research its meaning.
  4. I suppose I would say that she made the phallic shaped suggestive of being genitalia, however, they are more representational. So, I guess I would say they were “fake” in a way because its up to personal interpretation. And its authentic because its a true statement that women go through struggles in order to make it in the professional world.

  1. When it came to seeing Sottsass’s work, I became very excited by this chair that looks like it was part of an ancient roman column. It was titled, “Capitello” Chair made in 1971. Made of Polyurethane foam, latex rubber containing paint.
  2. This is a design piece and it is a chair. Meant for the purpose of sitting or lounging. I think that its a really eclectic piece of furniture. It solves the problem of aesthetics and making design also a piece of art. It is a chair, yes, although, it is also a sculpture. So it really does the job of mixing the two together.
  3. This piece really appeals to me because I really love columns and the architecture of ancient Greece and Rome. I think its incredibly interesting. Making it a usable piece of furniture was just fantastical to me and incredibly special to me.
  4. Its fake because its obvious not an ancient piece of art, its a copy of a design made by architects hundreds of years ago. So in a way its a “fake” but also its reimagined in to something else so it makes it new and authentic in a way. Original architects had no thought of using this purely structural piece of architecture and use it for holding bodies rather than buildings.
