I (Julie Vantrease), am a first year student at Parsons School of Design in New York City. I am majoring in Fine Arts and interested in minoring in some area of design.
This was my main inspiration for the piece I created. In this gallery, I am showing the process of myself creating a piece about body positivity. Of course, in this sculpture, all of the body types portrayed are what would be described as an ‘idealistic’ one. In many Greek sculptures it was common to portray the human form in this “perfect” sort of way. This image is what sparked some inspiration in me in order to make a statement about body image within the art world.
Heres another source of inspiration I had in creating a sketch for my initial idea. I was very interesting in the idea that this statue, an idealism of beauty, had rolls on her stomach.
Here is my initial sketch for the piece. Here I began figuring out what kind of body types that I wanted to represent. This piece was for my Drawing and Imaging final; about body positivity and the juxtaposition of greek sculpture and real women. This is when I decided that I wanted to portray a pregnant woman, a full figured woman, a curvier looking woman, and a very tall and thin looking figure.
Here is my last and much more refined sketch of the figures that I wanted to include in the piece. With this image, I began planning out what I wanted the background to be and the surrounding environment. I scanned this image and then was able to begin image tracing it in illustrator. Illustrator is where I made an outline of the image and painted the figures their gray marble-y color. I then exported the image to photoshop where I brought in an outside imagine in order to draw on top of.
Here is when I first brought the image into Photoshop with the pulled image. This is before I figured out what kind of stand I wanted the figures to be standing on. I did also edit the photograph that I pulled into the illustration in order to give the piece a much more saturated appearance.
This progress update is once I had already brought the artwork into Photoshop. I began painting the background base that I put in. I added more vibrant colored leaves and flowers in order to blend the background to the illustration of the women.
Here is my final artwork, made with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Something similar to the Is Fashion Modern piece, the Armadillo shoe, is that both are making a statement about something going on in the world. One was about the environment and mine about the bodies that take up this space.
