Fashion Styling

In Vogue: The Editor’s Eye

Notice at least 3 concrete examples of how fashion styling (that was shown in the documentary) supported a deeper understanding of a fashion trend, a storytelling concept, or specific piece of clothing.
List those examples in your post and explain what you appreciated.

  • In the documentary, the fashion editors talked about the Alice and Wonderland inspiration for a shoot and how based on the images they had to in a sense change the way the garments looked in order to create an appealing image. It enhanced the story, gave more motion, and a better sense of belonging to the pieces.
  • The photoshoot of women during the womens movement, directed by Polly Mellen, had a deeper understanding of the way women felt during this time. For instance, the theme of the women desiring men rather than the usual vice versa. It was groundbreaking and controversial but made the clothing that the women were wearing seem powerful, something desirable to feel like these women in the photos.
  • I really enjoyed the quote, “They give us access to another world. They give us access to dreams.” by Nicole Kidman. They create this fantasy world for these clothes to live in. Which in a sense makes them more desirable or mysteriousin a way.

Styling:

We are going to keep it simple since our dress is a bit overwhelming, color-wise. We might add some jewelry just to keep the entire look cohesive rather than the dress being the main focus. We decided that we want to keep the shoes simple; some black heels. For example, I really admire the way that Iris Apfel styles her jewelry to enhance her clothing. Perhaps this is something we can bring into our photoshoot.

Concerning the hair and makeup of the model, we know we want to keep it natural for the most part with a bronze colored eye and clear lip gloss. We probably won’t include any props in the photograph other than the fanny pack which can be detached from the dress. It could be held as a clutch or be worn around the waist.

Here are some of our sketches of what we envision the photo to look like.

Based on our prominent colors of yellow, black, and pops of blue and red, we think it would be best worn in a bright and natural environment. We want bright and direct lighting from outdoors. Potentially sunset lighting that would show the glow of the models makeup. We are thinking either a rooftop or street view. We don’t want to overwhelm the image with more bright colors or distracting images so we are most likely going to pick a location which will contrast the garment. We do have a model in mind although we are still going over different ideas! These aspects will support our concept because it follows the idea of the dress being from a spring collection because of all of the sun, bright colors, and mood of the photographs we will take.

Inspiration for our shoot:

I really love the way the dress flows with the wind (b&w image). Of course, our dress is much more structured and won’t be able to move the way that this lightweight fabric can. But the pose adds to the affect which I think we cant take into account. We like the idea of the sky being a main focus in the background because it would really compliment the colors of the garment. Also, Rooftop photograph inspiration. It would be interesting to photograph the model from below to give the appearance of being taller/more powerful.

I can’t really imagine how my experience doing this project could of been better. We made a great team and were efficient in scheduling when we wanted to work on the garment and planning together how we wanted to take our pictures.
For the makeup we kept it simple and went for a spring inspired feeling. We did bold brows and lots of highlighter and illuminating makeup.
The photoshoot day went very smoothly. We got our friend Xuan to model for us and thankfully she did a fantastic job. Our only issue, which is insignificant considering the immense amount of successes we had was that our model was a few sizes smaller than the dress form we used in order to sew the dress. Therefore we had to pin it tighter in order to fit her properly. We also had to tape the sides of the dress so the fabric wouldn’t expose her bust. We ended up deciding that she would be barefoot because of the already bold statement the dress was. We wanted the full focus to be on the dress. We did however add a choker and chain going down the bust of the dress in order to create a feeling of togetherness
