The True Cost

A) Create a list of at least 5 ethical/sustainability/human rights issues that you saw in the film. Understanding these issues will help you with the final project.

  • The fashion industry, specifically at H&M profiting billions of dollars in a year, and still having factory workers in Bangladesh being paid under $3 a day.
  • Factory owners/management physically assaulting women in the factory because they wanted higher wages.
  • Trashing the environment in exchange for lower costs of producing clothing (dying, waste, water pollution).
  • Workers demanding higher wages, for instance the riot that broke out in Cambodia for workers asking for a minimum wage of at least 140 dollars a month–being met by riot police and being shot at for peacefully protesting.
  • Farmers being forced out of their farms/land/businesses because Monsanto monopolized their seeds. Farmers losing everything they have- committing suicide in some cases because they have nothing left.

I’m convinced that Monsanto is the root of the very problem in this industry as well as lack of social concern in human rights and economic greed.
