IDEAS AND PROCESS:
At first, I was bursting with ideas for this project. I had a clear idea of what I wanted to produce, but over time it became less clear because the execution wasn’t going well. I originally wanted to do a cinemagraph scene that was set up to look like the the 40s, but once set up I didn’t think I looked convincing enough. I eventually moved on the a video of writing a letter to the future. I was feeling a bit uninspired at this point so I used ‘Poetic Beauty: JAEHYUN 재현’ to serve as my inspiration and motivation. The first time filming this video did not go well, the lighting was horrific and in the moment I lacked the ability to make anything good with it. So frantic to show something acceptable for the final, I made 3 photographs of layout of all the objects and photographs I have relating to my grandfather. I was ready to present that but on the morning of the final I opened my eyes to the bright sunshine I craved for the video. So I got it together, filmed and edited this final video. I had a clear vision of what I needed to film and how to edit this video. I wouldn’t do things differently in terms of how the video came out, I am very pleased with it.

The concept of the video is to see this moment. The light feels suspended and the world around is calm, soft, and gentle. In this small, solitary moment there are two souls. The physical person that is present and the future idea of that person as they are thinking of who they will be in the future, likely someone very different but as they write the letter, they urge themselves to remain true to themselves and remember the past that built them.
