The Personal is the Political

In Stanya Kahn’s Film Stand in the Stream it documents her life through a six year period. For me I believe that we are involved politically everyday from what we buy to if we decide to cross to the other side of the street to avoid someone. As a society we tend to forget that certain groups exist and live in a self centered bubble. This creates a chaotic mess of invisible people who are not ever able to stand up. Through Kahn’s footage she is able to display the forgotten people or events that the media skims over or tells only once. Sometimes I forget that I fit in all this that I am the daughter of two immigrants. That I am pansexual and also identity by they/ them pronouns. I forget people see me as a woman, or that I seem weak or people assume that I can’t do it just because of my physical features. Rooted within all of us is politics because it is breed into us through social norms and societal standards.
