Falcons

  • In the spring five falcon couples laid eggs, and three or four of the offspring survived. The fledglings are just becoming independent, meaning that they, too, are already hunting pigeons. A falcon may kill one or two pigeons a day, which could work out to more than 300 pigeons devoured citywide each week. A Battle to Survive
  • Falcons have also been reintroduced into wilderness areas of the East Coast where they once hunted, as well as to 30 other cities in the United States and Canada because their nests are easier to track in the cities.
  • But some naturalists said the birds of prey were probably not making much of a dent in the pigeon population.
  • falcons and New Yorkers respect each others’ privacy. The cooperation and understanding of New Yorkers is essential to the falcon’s comeback in the City. As long as we do not try to feed falcons or treat them as pets or disturb their nesting and feeding areas, there is nothing for New Yorkers to fear. Instead, with patience and a pair of powerful binoculars, we can enjoy watching the beauty of these birds in flight.
