Beauty is always a word that’s never out-dated, people put this word with all sort of things that can be called amazing, gorgeous and with nice appearance. However, beauty is not only used in such limited ways, it is also an adjective related with fashion. Fashion, on the other hand, can be a thought that’s new and special, something that’s beautiful and wonderful, a decorative garment that is trendy, and clothes that matches people’s taste in nowadays.
In my perspective, fashion could be a beautiful collection of things that presents people’s identity, culture and thoughts, it can reflect the society and even speaks for the past history. It is also important to point out that how people define beauty in fashion is based on their own experiences and understandings, beauty is something that’s unique among people, and we always get diversified answers. In my artworks, I chose to show different types of fashion trend during different period of time, the two outstanding artworks I made would be the two designed samples of fashion and beauty during Renaissance (14-16th century) and Rococo (18th century). In between, there’s almost two hundred years, we can clearly see that people’s taste of fashion and understanding of beauty changed a lot, no matter the colour used or the elements used. Some parts went complicated while some parts went simplified, they are so different, but both can be defined as a type of “beauty” that’s popular in that period of time. In this situation, beauty in fashion is not something that’s stable, it is changeable, with a wide range of acceptation from time to time. By investigating these two types of clothes, I learnt a lot about history, and from my point of view, beauty and fashion can also be a storybook recording history, and it also maintained how beauty changed in different ways.
As mentioned above, beauty and fashion is a collection of things that identify people. It is interesting to find that when we talk about fashion and beauty, it is not only something about clothes or outfits, it is a series of things that we wore or keep as a “whole”. These things always come together to form the sense of beauty, and this is why fashion pushes the history, and even pushing people going forward to the future. Beauty is what we expect to reach in the future, it can be a goal for fashion improvements. When we decided to put things together as a series, improvements and changes have been made when the taste of people change, which is the on-going fashion from the past to nowadays.
Beauty is always related with fashion, but it is also something that’s more than just fashion. Beauty is an adjective that can be used for almost anything around us in daily life. Hechizoo said: “When you see beauty, you have this moment of silence, of stillness.”, beauty in these words are a kind of feeling that may surprise you or amaze you. In the context of fashion, beauty is not so abstract as what we talked about above, in this case, beauty is more realistic and powerful, it can speaks up for something in fashion, it is not only a sense or feeling for one individuals, but a group or even a community, it is the sense that lots of people have at the same time. Maybe it is not for everyone, but it is for most people. However, there are people saying that beauty should be something that’s “beautiful”, and most people should accept it. In this case, beauty is been explained in a limited way. Beauty is actually something personal, it can be shared among people, it can be based on majority, but it should not be defined as “beautiful” in fashion nor meanings of the artworks.
In conclusion, beauty is an abstract word that can be used anywhere with individual opinion or experiences, it really depends on different situations. However, when it went together with fashion, it is explained as a type of feeling that a huge group of people gain at the same time. By researching the types of clothes in different eras in history, we can see so many interesting changes in the taste of people, how fashion changes, and how most people define the word “beauty” differently in a particular period of time. Last but not least, from my perspective, beauty in fashion is a kind of special “power” that pushes history and thoughts, to create change, to enhance, and to improve as a whole, leaving more possibilities for beauty in the context of fashion in the future.
