Sustainable System: Field Action+Reflection

Field Action

In this project, we are required to engage in an activity that builds new data for a course topic: Climate Change, Energy, Materials, and Water. I have done a few field action before, such as cleaning up the beach, growing trees in school’s backyard and the “saving electricity action” which we switch off the lights for one hour…etc. I think people should keep in mind that saving our environment is an important part for maintaining the sustainable system.

So, I decided to go to clean up the beach according to my schedule, and here’s the information and my reflection for this field action:

Date: Saturday 21st September.

Location: Coney Island Creek, Brooklyn.

What did I do? I actually participated in the group and decided to pick up trash on the beach. As we know, ocean pollution is a huge problem in nowadays, there are lots of organisms living in the ocean, if people throw garbage and wastes on beach, the waves may carry the trash into the ocean and therefore cause huge troubles for the organisms. On the other hand, people are also using water in daily life, the polluted water may affect our daily water usage and even cause harmful disease.

Ocean Pollution

Ocean pollution, deforestation, air pollution, global warming…etc. People are facing serious problems today, more and more pollution and wastes are produced, and it is harder and harder for us to maintain the sustainable system and the natural environment for the next hundred of years.

Louisiana (USA). May 6th, 2010. A ship cuts through a band of oil on the surface of the water. Asubstantial layer of oily sediment stretches for dozens of miles in all directions from the wellhead, suggesting that a large amount of oil did not evaporate or dissipate, but may have instead settled to the seafloor.
