Final Project

Proposal

My Seminar Thesis explores into the idea of feminine qualities shown in male fashion during the Rococo period around the 18th century. Looking into male suits that was worn by male figures and comparing it to female standards of society. I want to see what people considered feminine and masculine during this time in fashion. For my Studio Final, I want to analyze the relationship of gender norms throw clothing. Taking the opposite of what people would categorizing as famine and putting it on a male figure. What would society think? Is a man less masculine if seen wearing flowers on his suit or other feminine characteristics? I want to create a male blazer with a lace pattern cut into the fabric with a laser cutter. Lace is seen to be worn on women, a delicate fabric not usually seen on men. Gender norms have set the idea into society that men and women should only wear certain things that is categorized into their gender and if not it is seen as unusual.

Research: Men’s wear during the 17th-18th century

All of the images were found in the MET Costume Institute. This group of clothing is from the 17th-18th century from France. The martial that was used to make this coats were wool or silk. These coats were wore by upper class men during the time.

Famous male figure was Louis XIV of France. Every man during this time wanted to look like him and wanted to be him. This painting was done by Hyacinthe Rigaud, 1701 in oil paint. Now the painting is at the Le Louvre, Paris, France.

Flower sketches. Thinking of what type of pattern could be on the jacket.

Wed- April 12

Floral Pattern: Made in Illustrator (Not going to uses in final piece.)

In-class: Family Integration

One thing that comes to mind when I think of my family or back home is that the people always have smiles on their face’s no matter what. A smile can go so far to make a person’s day. I know when I’m down and a person passes by me and gives me a slight smile. That little gesture makes me smile and helps me get throw my day. I want to embroider a smile on my jacket. I’m not sure where to place it on the jacket yet but some where someone could see it and smile when they see it .

Because of time I changed my idea for the Family Integration. I went to Pacific Trim and bought a safety pin to put on to my jacket. I will place it on the back of my jacket right on the center seem to of the collar. This is a representation of back home and my family and the support that they give me like a back bone would.

Wed-April 19th

Created a New Pattern: Created in Illustrator.

(Using for final garment)

Drew the image on paper, placed it in Illustrator and created final pattern digitally. I wanted to test what it would look like when it was cut by the laser cutter. I tested it on a piece of bristol paper.

Jacket Pattern

Taking a male dress form and placing draping tape to the male form to create seams that would make the garment into a whole. After figuring out what the jacket would look like, placed muslin and traced the lines that was on the form. Making individual pieces that is part of the jacket. I will use this pattern to cut the final fabric that I choice.

Drape tape on dress form.

Pattern cut from muslin. (Not all the cutouts)

Created a digitally pattern.

This well help me place the pattern that I create on the jacket.

Mood fabrics.

Looking at the different types of fabrics that I could laser cut. Looking for all natural fibers no plastic. Can use cotton, felt or wool.

Had a hard time finding fabric in my price rang and still meet the requirements of an all natural fabric.

Ended up wanting to work with wool. Got a few swatches of the colors that I’m think of getting. The one on the right is a cherry red paired with a grey and the second one on the right is a a sea foam green with a grey.

Before buy the fabric I need to make sure that I buying the right amount for the jacket.

Wed-April 26

Mood Fabrics: Bought 2.5 yards of the red orange wool and 1 yard of grey wool.

Pacific Trimming: Bought 15 buttons and 1 safety pin.

Illustrator: Created flower pattern.

Laser cut test on wool:

In class: Logo and branding

Looking throw my sketch book and coming across a blind contour drawing that I have drawn. I’ve always wanted to use this image some where and I think it was the right time to do so. The image is a man with a crown and on the side is my name in lower capes. I’ve all ways had a love for classical art and this is a great example of it. The logo is nice, clean and shows what type of designer I am. I like to design clean cut clothing that people feel good and empowered. The clothing that I like to design is all so playful with a touch of childhood memories in them.

Over all I liked my logo and had time on the laser cutter to so some fun things that I printed my logo on a piece of felt. It’s hard to see in the photos but in person you can see the logo. Its one of the things that finishes the garment.

VISIT AN EXHIBIT AND PREPARE FOR YOUR PRESENTATION

Dover Street Market

Walking into Dover Street Market, I thought I was lost because I was not sure if I was in the right place for the reason that it did not look like what was show in the images on the web. After figuring out how the market worked, I started up and worked my way down the top floor was Gucci. I was very inspired how the show room looked with print on top of print. From the carpet to the wall paper for a lot of people they would not understand why everything was in your face when looking around. I thought the color and print was well paired together and it can draw in certain type of person to the clothing and making them want to buy a garment. When going throw the other floors it had a clean view to them with white on white or white and hints of color throw out the show room. It was interesting to see how each designer has their own shapes and you can she who they are as designers.

Thinking about how I can incorporate this into my final project? I wanted to take the idea of print on print like Gucci did in their show room and show my clothing in that type of way. Maybe I would create a small show room for the jacket and have it the way that I would display the garment to the buyers. As a designer presentation is everything, it’s the way that people view your garment that makes it looking interesting or not. I would have a little box the is college with how the show room with look like with floral print on top of each other. On the say would be a box that has my garment that has my garment this is how it would be present if a man was going to buy my jacket. I’m very glad that I went to Dover Street Market to see what other designers are doing with their clothing and how they are presenting their clothing.

Leading to the end:

It felt like time passed by so fast because the laser cutter was a pane to work with each machine has a mind of its own. Sometime it would cut the fabric perfectly fine but other times I would have to run it many times. With only having an hour each day time was becoming problem. I thought I would not have time to finish the garment.

Working with wool is very nice it sews very well. When sewing the garment the lines the I was creating was very clean looking on the outside and it made me very happy to see that on the coat.

Final Garment:

Making a little GIF of the coat. I imagine this being on a bill bored around the world playing on a loop.

Presenting is everything when is comes to the fashion industry. Its the factor that makes or breaks someone to buy your garment or not. I like the idea of print on print, something bold to get some one’s attention and making them want to by your things because of the presentation. I made a garment box, when a guy buys this coat it will come this box that has flowers and strips making a nice balance.
