PRINTMAKING – SHIFT STUDIO

I was really excited to start this project because printmaking is something I have never done before but have always been interested in doing. The demo shown looked kind of hard to do, it required skills to actually create a neat print in the end because carving the image requires precision and patience.

It was easy for me to get an idea of what I wanted to draw on the linoleum blocks. Some I hand drew based on my imagination, some from my own image I transferred by using carbon paper. It took a long time for me to carve out the drawing on the linoleum blocks because the surface is rough and hard, and I wanted my prints to be detailed which is why I did not rush the carving process.

The most challenging part for me was applying an even amount of paint to the blocks and transferring the colored print to the printmaking paper. I had a hard time evening out the colors because some parts needed color, some parts lacked color when I finally revealed it. However, I carved the parts that lacked color deeper so I was able to put more paint in my roller so the colors could even out. I obviously learned a new technique which is printmaking, but I also learned to try and experiment (carving and transferring colors), I was not afraid of not getting the result how I wanted it to be, but I kept trying until I was satisfied with my work. I enjoyed this experiment process and also discovered the changes  in my life which shaped the person I am now by looking back to the past when I remembered my shifts in life.  The next time, I would definitely carve my images deeper to make it easier when putting colors in it. I will also try encorporating different colors in one print, even though this is harder than what I did.

The connections I made between Studio and Seminar on this bridge was I learned to express my shifts in a completely different way, but still have my main picture in it, by using prints and an essay to tell the same story.
