Space/ Materiality

1. This piece is a Yves Saint Laurent piece. It is called The Statuary Vestment for the Virgin of El Rocío, ca. 1985. It is in courtesy of Chapelle Notre-Dame de Compassion, Paris. With a mantle crafted by Yves Saint Laurent and a tiara from Goossens, this lavish piece is a replica of the Virgin El Rocio located in Hermitage of El Rocio, Spain. This piece is meant to be a display at the Met Museum.

2. This piece is interesting to me because of its golden silk adornment and what really drew me in was its story. This piece shows the imagination of the Catholic Imagination as legend says “the virgin’s wooden form was discovered in the trunk of a tree that grew where the hermitage is located.” This piece opens up a dialogue about how religion can tell and influence people’s imagination and how both can be present simultaneously in harmony.

3. It is made out of Gold silk brocade with white and pink silk satin, gold silk and metal Chantilly lace, gold metal with polychrome crystals and pearls. The materials that are used to create the mantle are made out of silk, lace, and brocade, which would be comfortable to wear and refers to a Catholic church clothing. Also, the gold metal which is used is probably originally a sheet material, bent and crafted to make a shape of a crown, and then engraved with polychrome crystals and pearls.

4. Volume is created by stitching and joining materials together to create a bigger piece. The mantle’s volume is made out of mostly silk which is stitched together, while the tiara’s volume is shaped out of gold metal. Negative space is created by having a space to fit something in. In this case, the mannequin is the negative space. The path is shown by the red marker which shows the beginning and the end of it.

This is my wood necklace. The idea of the design is jenga blocks, I wanted to combine different wood blocks which have different sizes and thickness and make it into a necklace. The process of the design is at first I thought of having just one single piece of wood which is polished, but then after imagining how it would look like, I thought that just having one might be too simple, which then lead me to design it made out of lots if different shaped and sized carved wood so that it is more abstract.

I firstly prepared scrap wood I found from the wood shop, I picked the wood which has a thickness I want. Then, I measured them the way I want the size to be and labeled the holes I am going to drill later on. Then, I cut them with the wood cutting machine. I then scraped them to give it a nice smooth rounded edge and drilled them to create holes to put the wire in. After cutting all the wood and get them to the shape I want, I then assembled them using wire and looped the wire in the end.
