BRIDGE 5- Artist’s Book

Center of book arts visit

FINAL BOOK

Quotes I chose to use

For this bridge project, I made a triangle book that is my reflection of my first-semester studio class. It tells a story of the things I have learned so far and what I have gained through this learning process. After visiting the center of book arts, I got an idea of making a triangle book. I want the contents to be short but meaningful, and at the same time mysterious, you would have to get an explanation to understand the meaning behind each painting and quote and how it is related to my reflection of the studio class. For the process, I first painted the pictures with gouache, then pasted another layer of paper behind it for the words and to make it thicker. Then, I poked holes and aligned each hole before sewing them together. Finally, I attached a gold patterned paper to finish it up. The quote on the first page shows what I learned in bridge 1, to accept changes in life because it is what makes me who I am now and a better person every single day. I used water to show this because water flows through changes, and that is what I learned looking back at bridge 1, to accept changes and go with the flow. For bridge 2, the quote is to think what people have not thought of, and I learned this by the multiple perspectives assignment, I learned to go out of my comfort zone by doing an assignment that was not what I was used to. For bridge 3, I learned to work in groups and it opened up my mind, that by listening to other’s opinions, we get more ideas and learn more. We see things differently when we see it together, which is why I symbolized it with glasses with a different scene from each glass. lastly, bridge 4 thought me to think creatively and not be afraid to make mistakes, just like wildflowers which grow freely, and that is what makes them beautiful.

Overall, this bridge 5 project, I definitely learned more about bookmaking, I looked back at my studio this semester and it was irreplaceable because when looking at what I have learned so far,   I can say that it has somehow changed me. I have become a more risktaking artist who is not afraid of challenges and making changes by doing all of the challenging yet creative assignments for this studio class. What I will always remember is to not be afraid to make mistakes and develop my ideas ( not jump straight to a final design) and this is a life lesson especially for the next years ahead of me in parsons. In terms of the book, I am satisfied with it because it shows what I learned overall in a simple yet creative way. If I had more time, I would try experimenting with different forms, for example, an accordion book, or make it a hardcover.
