Sustainable Systems Project Proposal

The world we live in keeps on getting worse each day mainly because of pollution in the air and most importantly, the water system. The main problem is that the production of materials produces harmful wastewater. To mitigate this problem, I will redesign an existing room – my bedroom specifically that will use sustainable materials that do not harm the water system in the production process by not using a lot of chemicals such as paints for wood, and insectides for cotton used to make textiles. The project will promote sustainability by using sustainable materials for the designed room. The desired effects of the project are that it would make the water system cleaner and better by using sustainable materials that produce cleaner wastewater in the production process. It would also make the interior healthier by not using materials that contain chemicals and toxins and therefore creating a more comfortable environment for the people to live in.

Since it is my bedroom, I will be impacted by this project because I would be able to live in a healthier and more comfortable space by having the room made out of non-harmful materials (sustainable materials). Also looking towards the future, this sustainable interior project would inspire other designers to hopefully incorporate sustainability in interior design.

The Project will include a plan of the interior which will be made digitally using AutoCAD. Then the plan will be rendered into a 3d space using SketchUp that shows the materials that will be used- such as the different surfaces and textures. The final step is to make a mood board showcasing sustainable materials that do not harm the water system to give the audience a better understanding of the material by being able to feel and touch it. The textures will use sustainable materials (wood, fabric, etc.) and will be arranged aesthetically and artistically. It will also have different colors that reflect the color palette of the room.

The prototype would take 6 weeks to produce (AutoCAD, SketchUp rendering, mood board). However, it would take around 3 months to be able to create interior made out of sustainable materials a reality because it requires a lot of time to collect and find furniture that uses sustainable materials. The project presents obvious challenges such as finding the perfect alternative (sustainable) to replace the old materials used in the interior and also to find the swatches that use sustainable materials that do not harm the water system to represent the room. My strategies are to do a lot of research and to look for stores that promote sustainability, also constantly visiting the healthier materials lab to collect materials that can be used to make up the mood board.

A Reference of an interior that uses sustainable materials is Bambu Indah Resort in Bali where the structure of the rooms and the furniture are made out of wild Bamboo. Most importantly, they use recycled cotton and silk for pillows, bedsheets, etc.
