Field Exercise Reflection Union Square

My favorite part of this assignment was going down to the subway station and being able to tune out the craziness of the subways with the three tunes of the assignment. I was able to reconstruct what was happening. The most interesting part was when I was listening to Peter Vogel’s piece. Somehow this piece was even busier than the subway and the rush of the people at the moment. Even with everyone walking in different directions involved in different conversations, the sound piece was more energetic. It made the subway seem, for a very brief period, calm and quiet.

As someone who absolutely loves music and spends a majority of the day listening to it, I definitely understand the impact and importance of it. In any way or form, whether a song, a background soundtrack in a movie, or even added instrumentals to exemplify, music and sounds have a huge impact on how a moment is played out. So being able to completely reconstruct the subway in my mind just by listening to different sounds is incredible. Some made it seem like a calm place, while others made the busyness bold. I loved experimenting with this idea and would love to in other locations as well.
