Final Project IS2 – Visual Culture

(Scroll down for latest update)

Work done since 15th April- (Prototypes)

  • Provide an updated explanation of your specific message/content which you are exploring in studio. Include the materials you are using and why they are relevant and important.

I am exploring the theme of Gender and more specifically how girls are treated differently and are discriminated because of their gender. How they are forced to do certain things and are forced not to do certain things too. I am also interested in comparing the difference in the discrimination between India (my hometown) and United States. I plan on making a series of artworks that show my journey as a girl in India and how it changed when I came to the United States.  I plan on using a variety of mediums as i will be making a series. They include water colour, photography, illustrations, photoshop, video, text and plaster gauze.

For now I was given the suggestion by Brian to only make illustrations and then finalise the pieces with other mediums in the upcoming weeks.

  • Write a short statement on how your research in Seminar is connecting and informing your Studio project, and vice versa.  (You will be reflecting on how these two are connecting over the next several weeks.)

I am currently researching statistics between men and women in different aspects like sex ratio, pay, sexual assault, literacy rate and income. I am also researching these aspects cross- culturally, between India and The United States. My research paper in seminar would be based on the exact same topic as studio but would also include statistics and numerical information which my studio piece wouldn’t have. I would show the cross culture difference in both my paper in seminar and my illustrations in studio.

  • Write the feedback you received from group critiques and/or from Bryan:  What I heard in critique was to make my pieces a bit more related to me so that it helps the viewer connect it more to me. I was also told to play with sizes to make one art piece quite big and the other one too small. It was helpful because it pushed me to further develop new ideas for my illustrations and to push my project further

  • Explain the research you’ve done since our April 15th class and your research plans for the upcoming week.  Since last week I researched Plaster Gauze and Citra Solvent.  I researched the cost and purchased supplies at Blick. The artists I researched are Martha Rosler, Shirin Neshat, Cindy Sherman, Nan Goldin, and Sara Lucas. Currently I was given the suggestion by Brian to only make illustrations and then finalise the pieces with other mediums in the upcoming weeks on the same topic.

  • Write an explanation of what you will plan to complete for next class* and write how long you think it will take you to do it.
  • For next class I plan on making 6 illustrations
    1. Each illustration will take an hour to make- 1×6= 6 hours
    2. It will take about an hour to think of ideas = 1 hour
    3. It would take 2 hours to cut all the illustrations and to mount them on cardboard. = 2 hours

Total-  9 hours.

Final Project IS2 – Visual Culture

  1. Upload process image(s) of your final project (to demonstrate the sequence of making)which reflects the work you did on it since our last class on Monday, April 22nd.

2.   Write the feedback you received from group critiques and/or from Bryan: what I heard in critique was…. It was helpful because….

The feedback that I received from Bryan was to add more sewing to my illustrations and to make new illustrations too. I was also given a good feedback on my idea for the box, so will be developing that for next week. I was given a new idea, to make a hand with alginate or plaster gauze and to wrap it around with wire to show it as an extension of my illustrations.

  1. Explain any new research you’ve done since our April 22ndclass and your research plans for the upcoming week:

Methods: Hand Stitching and materials/mediums: sewing.

Since last week I researched hand stitching and linoleum cut. I watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjzSR4swifw  and bought sewing supplies and worked on my piece. I handstitched some elements that I worked on to add a new level and to make them more interesting.”

  1. Write an explanation of what you will plan to complete for next class* and write how long you think it will take you to do it.
    1. For next class I plan on working on my illustrations by sewing onto them- 2-3 hours for all illustrations
    2. I also have to make a box from plexi glass – 1-2 hours
    3. Make new illustrations- 2-3 hours
    4. Cast my hand- 2-3 hours

Installed work:

A project that I am most proud of in this semester, not only because of the outcomes, but because of the process, motives and learning. I evolved through this project just like my ideas evolved. From exploring LGBTQ community to plastic surgery, I somehow landed up at telling my own story and that of a million other girls in India. I was always fond of creating illustrations but by adding the hand sewing element i not only did learn a new skill but added another depth, power and meaning to my illustrations. Hand stitching also acts as an expression of me coming out of my comfort zone, as I had never worked with hand stitching before and was always resistant towards it. But by using it in his project, I got over that resistance and learnt a new technique. My artwork also got a lot more interesting and interactive by adding it. I also made a 3d head piece which was wrapped with “caution tape”,  which was placed on a wooden stand made by me. I had never worked with wood before and found it a great medium to enhance something and a great skill to have.

The most satisfying thing for me in this project was not just the final artwork or the making process it was creating awareness about this issue and making a project about something that i feel so strong about. Moreover, this project got me thinking and got me interested in working in an NGO over the summer back in India to create awareness of the issue at a wide scale and help and educate girls in understanding the issue and making them aware of the opportunities and solutions that they have available. I would be taking this up in the summer and have already contacted a few NGO’s back in India, who are fully supportive and encourage people to come forward in making it a better place for the girls who themselves aren’t powerful enough to do so. Even the older generation would be reached as they are the ones putting the restrictions on girls who think they have no way out.

If i had to re-do this project again, i would make a few changes in how i display the piece. The caution tape would be put infront of the artwork, creating a crossing a crime scene like of situation. One would literally have to move the caution tapes away from their hands and then go infront to see the artwork. I would also, have some strings coming out of one of the art pieces in specific.
