For this assignment I was assigned to create a piece of artwork that reflected a specific memory from my past. I decided to focus on a powerful and emotional memory from earlier this year, the moment I found out my friend had passed away. I am not one to show sadness or anger outwardly while in the presence of other people, however I found out the terrible news while surrounded by many people. In that moment I felt exposed and vulnerable showing so much raw emotion in front of others. I felt sadness and anger, overall hurt and confusion, which lead to anxiety. I translated the emotions of the memory into a charcoal portrait, showcasing vulnerability and anxieties through the contrast of light and dark and the hectic sketchy style. White symbolizes vulnerability and the covering of the eyes and mouth conveys both a sense of panic and confusion, as well as the need to shield emotions from others.
