BRIDGE 4: Myself in Time – Journey Through Imaginary Space

Process:
As we started to briefly discuss about the project, the initial idea that came into my mind was recreating elements from movies or music –the top two time-involving mediums which have been dominating my life– with my own interpretation. I eventually decided to create collective images of my own interpretation as an artwork/cover image in response to my emotions and sensations while I listen to music compositions.

Procedures:
Upon working on the project, I have created a collection of instrumental music and songs which have been trending in myself these day, then repeatedly listened to them in order to grasp the textures of sounds, musical compositions and elements to be visualized while I pay attention to my own emotional movements during the experience. Procreate and Photoshop were used to create responding image efficiently. Those images were then placed on the layout I’d created on InDesign alone, with short descriptions of background information and some verbal explanation of how I sense the music compositions. Since I wanted to created some sort of interaction with my chapter, I included Spotify codes in each pages so that viewer can instantly access to the track using their smartphone or personal computer. All digital illustrations were set to square, in respect to the traditional cover images of physical CD and vinyls. I decided to make the layout to have consistency/uniformity since my chapter was about showcasing multiple pieces that are the same size and created under the common theme.

Reflection:
Overall, I’m satisfied with how I ended up with my chapter and how its appearance was  well coordinated as a result. It was my intention that I’ve created these pieces of digital illustrations in multiple styles and compositions in order to “adapt” to each of music pieces that I was responding to; nevertheless, as I had planned, they were able to establish a coherence under the the layout I created for them, also being helped by the fact that I had limited the range of hues for the illustrations while painting them differently. Throughout this project, I was not only able to learn techniques to create a design for bonding a collection of works in different directions, but also interestingly noticed how my taste of music had changed over quarantine days; I now tend to listen to more songs with vocals rather than instrumental songs that I frequently used to listen to.
