City as Resource #3: Lecture

WHO you saw speak:

Tattfoo Tan

When and Where they spoke:

April 4th, 2019

The New School University Center

What they spoke about:

Tattfoo mainly talked about how to heal the man before healing the world. He talked about his latest work called the “New Earth” and how humans are responsible for creating a better and more sustainable world. He also talked about how to heal a man spiritually which I thought was very interesting. He talked more into the Anthropocene which is how the human activity has an effect on the current age. He also stated that when an artist/person makes something into the environment either a design or a project, he or she has to be considerate towards the environment and how it would affect it.

Why they were speaking on this topic/What made them an expert?

Artist Tattfoo Tan’s practice focuses on issues relating to ecology, sustainability, and healthy living. His work is project-based, ephemeral and educational in nature. He has been widely recognized for his artistic contributions and service to the community and is the proud recipient of a proclamation from The City of New York. In 2010, Tan received the annual Award for Excellence in Design by the Public Design Commission of the City of New York for his design and branding of the Super-Graphic on Bronx River Art Center.

Why you were engaged with the subject matter?

I was always very interested in putting out a design to the environment but I never really considered how it would affect the environment and the current age we are living in before. After listening to Tan I realized a lot of things, such as being considered of the environment in every step I take. I am also a strong advocate for protecting the environment so listening to him and coming up with ideas was very inspiring. I also am really interested in learning more about healing through spirituality, even though he didn’t mention it too much I read about him after he spoke and was very interested in it. I also really liked his saying: “Heal the man in order to heal the land.”

What you hoped to further understand?

I would have loved to learn more about his early works and how he came to the position he is right now. Also more about how to heal a man through spiritual ways. I was very interested in that topic when he mentioned it so I would have loved to learn more about it through his own words.

Write three questions you would have liked to ask the presenter, or did get to ask!

  1. I was interested in the quote “our vision of the world must be extended to encompass all the invisible energies with which we have lost contact” could you further explain it to us? – Did get to ask.
  2. After reading about your interests in healing oneself, do you believe that if every person healed each other by focusing on their strengths and also their weaknesses and overcoming them, then the world would at least face some of its problems?
  3. How does a person connect more the to the world and the people around them if they are connected to themselves? How would that be correlated?
