Bridge 1 – Shades of Self(ie), an exercise in real fake (real) identity

1.What different character(s) were you exploring when you created your “fake” selfies?

When I was creating my identities, I wanted to do two extreme identities that are opposite to each other. Therefore, I thought about why don’t I just choose two personalities traits that I have. Throughout making the punk/rock identity, I used metal spikes to exaggerate the physical appearance. Also, to make the whole appearance consistent, I have worn clothing that represents punk/rock. On the other hand, the other identity is more of a softer tone. To achieve that, I chose to wear different items that present more girlish features.

2.What are the personalities of your fake selfies?

One selfie presents a person who looks confident and not scared of anything, and the other selfies is a person who is positive with a smile on the face. From the physical features, for example, wearing all black and the other wears all white; you can see both of the selfies has a completely different personality.

3.What made your “real” selfie real?

My ‘real’ selfies are real because it shows my true personalities, where I am scared and afraid of many things, unlike the punk identity. Similarly, although the softer victorian identity looks positive, but in reality, I feel depressed often. As result, I wanted to show the real facial emotions for the ‘real’ selfie and I changed my items of clothing to a more modern and neutral style. The colour still matches my fake selfies, since I want to make it consistent and looking like a series.

4.What was the most challenging part of this assignment?

I think the most challenging part of this assignment is where we have to create identities. It is challenging to think what to create and how you will make your idea work. However, this challenge applies to all times when you are creating.

5.What was your favorite part of this assignment?

My favorite part of this assignment is where we can create and dress up as a character with a fake identity. I find it fun because you can experience different materials and also have a chance to dress up as a person who you have never dressed up before.

6.Do you feel that what you created is art? If yes, how so? If no, why not?

I think it’s still a part of the art side, although it may seems more of a fashion photography. However, the theme of fake identities makes this assignment as an artwork.
