Practicing visual research – part I: stereotype disruption

For this project, we need to make two risographs that involve with a stereotype and we need to appreciate one photo from the internet; altering and giving it an ironic meaning.

1. Risograph 1

The first meme that I did is about communism, how some people stereotype that communism all look the same and is the same. It is like how ballerina all look the same as well. Therefore, it results in two meanings about the stereotype of thinking that both subjects are the same. I put the circles with the word “same” on it to cover their faces up to make it more obvious that they look physically the same. Lastly, I used monochrome risograph to show the contrast between the uniform and the covered up faces, so it will make the figures pop up more. Overall, the image conveys that we should not assume and stereotype on communism and ballerinas that they are always the same, with the same personalities too.

2.Risograph 2

The second meme is about modern stereotypes of Chinese society and I used google cause everywhere else can access it, expect China. Therefore, this presents other points of views and perspective on China. In the search engine, I photoshopped the modern stereotypes in it to show what are the stereotypes on Chinese are from some other people. I left some blank ones to show and question what will the future stereotypes be and hoping there won’t be any stereotypes anymore too. After, I printed with risograph in two colors, the pink and black. The pink is slighted off a bit from the original black image, so then resulting an electric screen feeling, which corresponds to technologies we use to accessing websites like google.
