“NYC Subway is one of the oldest and busiest public transit systems and the metro system with the most stations and the most trackage. When the subway opened in 1904, it launched an unprecedented era of growth and prosperity for the newly unified New York City. One hundred years later, the city’s reliance on its underground rapid transit system is greater than ever. NYC Transit keeps New York moving 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as its subways speed through underground tunnels and elevated structures in the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.”
Subway plays a significant role in people’s life. It’s hard to imagine what life would be like without subway, especially for people who live or work in New York. So this project I want to focus on commemorating NYC Subway in relation to people’s everyday life and its long history that witnessed rapid changes of NYC.So I choose City Hall Loop as the site. “Opened from 1904 to 1945, located underneath the public area in front of City Hall, it was the original southern terminal station of the first line of the New York City Subway.Considered to be one of the most beautiful subway stations in the system, the station is unusually elegant in architectural style. The platform and mezzanine feature Guastavino tile, skylights, colored glass tile work and brass chandeliers.Although it discontinued passenger service, it’s still being used as a turning loop for 6 trains”
Since the platform is a curve and it’s an empty station, it will be a good place for a gallery with some interactive installation.
Process:
Making a site model is much harder than I though especially for this one.The curve makes it difficult. Measuring is so important, and it requires relative accuracy which has been a real headache for me. Also making stairs was so annoying and I failed for several times because it’s too small.
