FASHION STUDIO Finding Connections/Making Style

When I walked into “The Harold Koda Gift” section of the exhibition, the Martin Margiela gown designed by John Galliano immediately caught my attention. To me Galliano has always had this kind of magic, making a simple looking piece extremely attractive. Although the two bright and colorful sequin dresses (also incredibly beautiful) by Tom Ford are right beside this gown, it almost felt like the gown was the only piece of garment, or I should say, art, in the entire room.

Based on my strong feeling towards the Margiela gown, I decided to select my Adidas Classic Striped Jacket since it has the same simple yet appealing-to-the-eye nature as well. Using Furisode, which is the most formal kimono worn by young women in Japan, as the base of my design, I kept the Japanese traditional element and simple color scheme that Galliano selected. I also held on to the original form of the Adidas jacket because I believe it can only look as powerful as it originally was in this way. I created a draping effect by adopting the insanely long sleeves from Furisode and adding an extension to the fabric. The nude color parts are made of Kinsha Silk, which is a fine and light style of silk, while the red and patterned parts are Silk Chirimen, which is also silk but with thicker and heavier touch. The white stripes and Adidas Originals logo on the back are also made of Silk Chirimen.
