Persona: Free Falling

My garment is a belt that is attached around my partner’s waist. It’s a represenation of my partner’s fear- the fear of falling. I took an abstract view on his fear and tried to give him an alternative way to view his fear. He embodies ‘Basiphobia’ by portraying the sensation of toppling building. The reason it is concentrated at the bottom half of his body is so that he doesn’t feel inferior to his fear and can literally and figuratively look down upon it. Since he is scared to be on building rooftoops while he shoots photographs of the skyline, I incorporated hues of blue that in my mind are the windows of opportunity he sees through his camera lense. The Empire State building being the tallest skyskraper in the city seemed to be the perfect choice to use as the motif to portray my partner’s fear. I also used brass fasteners to attach the garment together so that it was have an industrial finish just like hardscape of a building.

The Critique- After hearing the thoughts of my classmates and Professor, I felt like I made a good decision by creating a focus on the lower half of the body with the buildings. The choice to underlay images of the sky worked well too. However I could have increased the number of buildings to further amplify my objective. Using silver brass fasteners instead of gold ones would’ve given the buildings more focus and emphasised more on the actual context of the piece.
