Joining Sculpture

For our first space and materiality assignment we were asked to make a “Joining Sculpture” using the U-L-O joints (2 of each). From the very beginning I knew I wanted to create an elevation for the form of my sculpture. For the function I chose to place the 2 L joints on the corner and the 2 O joints in the centre of a square piece of wood. My primary sketch looked like a table, standing erect with the help of longer vertical pieces of wood. I inserted two long pieces in the O joints however I chose to curve their edges to add fluidity. I felt like this created an interesting dynamic with the linear and straight edges of the legs. Chiselling out the larger U joint was challenging as it had to be equally levelled out however all in all it was extremely enthralling to be working in the wood shop. I will definitely be spending a lot more of my time in there.
