Visual And Auditory Experiment

visualproject

For Integrative Studio 1 we  worked on  “Visual & Auditory experiment.” we were assigned to focus on the atmosphere that we surround ourselves in on a daily basis. We deprived ourselves of the sense of hearing by wearing earplugs and the ability to see by closing our eyes. We did this for about 20 minutes.
My partner and I decided to work on this exercise at Union square park since we were both familiar with this park. On, our way to the park I wore the earplugs and on our way back she wore the earplugs. At, the park we both sat on the benches at the park and closed our eyes for about 20 minutes when those 20 minutes were over we discussed our experiences.
We both agreed that when we wore the earplugs we notice the sense of touch more because we were able to feel our own steps as we walked which was interesting to us because on a normal day we ignore and never pay attention to the way we walk or the sound and feeling as we touch the ground.
We both agreed that when we wore the earplugs we notice the sense of touch more because we were able to feel our own steps as we walked which was interesting to us because on a normal day we ignore and never pay attention to the way we walk or the sound and feeling as we touch the ground, the sound and feeling as we touch our feet to the ground. The thump it makes and slight shake in our head it causes. When we took away our sight we both also agreed that, without sight, we paid more attention to our other four senses. Since it was a cloudy day, we were both able to clearly feel the wind hit our faces. It blew our hair and gave us chills. We paid more attention to every sound around us, especially the sound of footsteps and the different weight of each individual’s step. We were able to differentiate the different kind of shoes that passed by us such as Sandals, high heels or sneakers as well as the sound of cars, the wind blowing the trees, and people around the park.
We decided to make a 3D sculpture, which we titled “Flat sound”  to show our experiences when being deprived of the sense of sight and hearing. We went back to the park and recorded the sounds we hear and the visuals of feet walking past us, Then we put together different kinds of footwear to represent and try to make others understand the noises of shoes that we listened to as our eyes were closed. A sandal for the sound of a person flip flopping around, a high heel for the noise of a sharp click against the ground, and a sneaker for the individuals that walked by and made a thud. The sneaker with pins on also represents a foot that falls asleep which feels like more than one hundred pins are poking you. This happened to my partner. Her foot had felt like this as she sat for an extended time on the bench. Each different shoe created a different sound on the floor as a person walked by, which made me and my partner realize that the sense of sound is a big help when we are deprived of sight, also there is a small car in between the shoes because it is meant to represent the sounds of cars during traffic on the streets which we were able to listen too as well. With this art piece we want to try to make others understand what me and my partner experienced when we were both deprived of sound and sight for a couple of minutes, were we pay more attention to our senses and things around us that we ignore on a daily basis.

We decided to make a 3D sculpture, which we titled “Flat sound”  to show our experienced when deprived from the sense of sight and sound to demonstrate that as sight and hearing were inaccessible to us we were able to clearly listen and pay more attention to the sounds around us. We put together different kinds of footwear to represent and try to make others understand the sound of shoes that we listened as our eyes were closed. A sandal for the sound of a person walking by that had sandals on, a high heel for another person that walked by with high heels on stepping on the concrete floor, and a sneaker for the person that also walked by with simple shoes on, the sneaker with pins on also represents a foot that falls asleep which feels like more than one hundred pins are poking one’s foot, which is what my partner had felt when we sat for a long time on the bench. Each different shoe created a different sound on the floor as a person walked by, which made me and my partner realize that the sense of sound is a big help when we are deprived from sight because sound helps to identify the things that might be around us. There is also a small car in between the shoes because it is meant to represent the sounds of cars during traffic on the streets which we were able to listen too as well. With, this art piece we want to try to make others understand what my partner and I experienced when we were both deprived from sound and sight for a couple of minutes, where we pay more attention to our senses and things around us that we never really pay attention to on a daily basis.

In class we decided to present a video instead of the actual sculpture that my partner and I created because although it did emphasized what we had felt and listen as our eyes were closed, we felt it was better to project the video with the picture of our sculpture and background video to demonstrate what we listen as our eyes were closed. We also intended to make a projector out of a box, and project the video on the sculpture, which we did but it did not work which is why we de decided to instead show the video in class and just talk about our project.
