Kombucha Leather Project

For sustainable systems we had to grow leather out of tea, Scoby and kombucha. It took about a month for the leather to grow to a size that was usable and then I needed to pull it out to dry so I could use it form and make stuff. When I pulled it out of the tea mixture it was thick and wet and needed to be dried out. When it was dry it had a similar texture to leather. So I grew a Scoby into kombucha leather which I then turned into a jewelry dish! I formed the leather around a small plate and curved the ends upward so that my small jewels wouldn’t fall out. The leather is an excellent choice for a dish because of it’s gummy texture the slick jewels will not fall out as easily as they do in standard porcelain trays. The color is a light tan and would go nicely in any room decor because it is neutral. I only used the plate to form my jewelry tray, so I effectively made my project without using any systems because the tray can be reused. This is environmentally friendly and could be transformed into something else if needed. It would just need to soak again but it could turn into anything really.
