Christopher Brewards Aphorisms

The first Aphorism I picked was “Fashion can be about confirmation, of self and others. But it is also about anxiety, ambiguity and worry. As an aid to understanding complexities it is unsurpassed.” What I think this means is that fashion is a way for us to feel like were a part of a larger group while still maintaining our individualism. Fashion is a choice we make daily which can cause stress about how we look, it causes us to make decisions- whether they are easy or tough. I agree with the statement Christopher Breward is making about fashion. Dressing a certain way can make you feel like you’re a part of a group or a larger picture while still providing a sense of individualism. To counter that however, fashion can cause anxiety and stress over what to wear and what other people will think of us when we wear those things, thus being a psychological complexity.  Fashion can provide us with worry and fear, or relief and confidence.

The second Aphorism I picked was “Fashion does not define. It is instead a term that demands definition.”  I disagree with this statement because I think that people are always defining us by what we wear. While we may not define ourselves in that way, people are constantly judging by first impressions. If you see someone with expensive clothes you will define them as rich. If you see someone with good style you will define them as fashionable. Fashion has many different definitions depending on perspective of individuals. What I consider to be fashion will be different from other people, therefore fashion does define, and has many definitions already.
