History of Fashion Final Paper Proposal

This image is from Yohji Yamamoto’s Spring 1998 transformative wedding dress collection.  A show-stopping white crinoline dress topped with an obscenely large hat held up by four bamboo poles carried by four separate men marked the highlight of this collection.  On the collection, Yamamoto cites his desire to tell young peoples’ stories, as there is much behind a wedding dress that most do not see.  The second image comes from the following year’s show as models walked down the runway undoing their gowns to reveal another gown underneath.  I am interested in seeing how Yamamoto was able to use both dark and light and layering to convey a story and to uniquely transform such a traditional garment.

These are editorial images for Jil Sander F/W 1992.  Photographed was  supermodel Christy Turlington early in her career.  I was particularly drawn to the androgyny and use of contrast in the photographs and how this may have fit into the fashions of the decade and how this may play against or toward how we continue to perceive this time period in fashion.  The 90’s were characterized by certain distinct styles and I am interested in investigating how Jil Sander’s classic minimalism, as well as the styling of this editorial shoot, fits into this stereotype.

This is an image of my grandparents. They had met in South Korea when my grandfather was stationed there during the Korean War.  My grandmother had been working in a sundry store near the American army base when my grandfather had walked in and was instantly taken with her.  The location and exact time of this photo are unknown to me as of now, however, upon further inquisition and interviewing of my grandparents, I should be able to find out more specifics. Most likely, this photo had been taken either shortly before they were married or shortly after.  What intrigues me the most is my grandmother’s adaptation of Wetern styles of clothing and styles and how this may have changed after meeting my grandfather and then moving to the United States.
