“Portraits”

On my shared experience with Mila we went on a long walk starting at The Bean on 9th and 1st Ave, and made our way down through SoHo down to Canal St, then back up to Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village.  Through our experience we shared a lot about our childhoods, interests in the design field, and a lot about traveling and similar experiences we both encountered.  Mila also shared with me her senior project video on homelessness in Boston, and I was very moved by the work and help she was able to achieve within the homeless population in Boston, and more importantly how she portrayed a message to the general public about the problem that many are experiencing.  My “portraits” sit on a base over 8 overplayed maps of Colombia where Mila is from, Little Compton, Rhode Island where I am from, Boston where Mila moved to and I also have a strong connection with, as well as Segovia Spain, Ireland, and the Azores Islands of Portugal that are all areas where we have both traveled and have strong connections to.  The two main maps are of New York where are lives have coincided, and show the path we took on our shared experience.  The two sets of glasses show how when looking at the same thing that is the problem of homelessness, how Mila and I see a solution to help.  Through Mila’s eyes of photo, journalism, and video, she sees a solution of talking and understanding the people behind the sad signs, and uses her skills to bring that information in front of the public, and help people understand what is going on in their life.  Through my eyes of building and architecture, my portrait shows different types of temporary or reusable solutions of shelters and supplies to physically help or protect the homeless.  Through art and design there are many different angles of pursuit to solve any problem or epidemic.
