Stools/Figures Drawings and White Figure/Ambiguous Compositions

In this project, we did many figure drawings and learned how to render the shadows and tones. We began by making 1-minute quick sketches, and then we drew the model in 20-minute poses. We also did a drawing of artists’ stools. After that, we scanned our drawings and combined them digitally, changing scale and position, and turned the composition into a black and white version. Using the white shapes cut from our composition, we created two new compositions, one with a white “figure” on a black background and one in which the figure and ground were ambiguous. I first made a set of compositions by hand, and then I made my final piece digitally, using illustrator. It was my first time using Adobe Illustrator, and the pen tool was really difficult to control!

My first set of compositions are made by hand, and I hadn’t used the same shapes in both. Therefore, I changed both compositions when I make my final set digitally.

Overall I enjoyed this project very much because I learned how to use Adobe Illustrator and manipulate negative spaces to make interesting compositions!
