Look! Paris! – Final documentation

Mediation to public

Look! Paris is an activity book for children that will be available at the entrance of the Carnavalet Museum, or available for preorder online. Filled with a variety of games, questions, quizzes, and at-home activities, the book aims to not only engage children with the objects and stories in the museum, but connect its history to their own everyday life. Rather than follow a parent or teacher around the museum, the child can learn about Paris as an ancient city, and this activity book could give a child a whole new perspective on where they stand in history. Some activities will simply prompt a closer look, others will be educational, and some will allow room for fun and creativity. Each game strives for simplicity as to not distract the child too much from the museum itself. Suitable for ages 7-12, Look!Paris! can take you on a journey through time.

The intended audience is children of all backgrounds from ages 7-12. The family’s that might be interested in the booklet are those who bring their children to museums for educational purposes, or parents who are interested in the museum themselves and hope to entertain their children while they enjoy their visit. It could also be attractive to school groups. The activity book acts as a solution to a noticeable lack of variety in the Carnavalet’s visitor demographic, which primarily appears to be made up of older, retired, people.

The production of this booklet takes inspiration from the Louvre scavenger hunt, checklist for children at the Van Gogh Museum, and various other activity booklets for children provided by museums.

Carnavalet’s mission is to document the ever-transformative history of Paris. To provide a type of mediation that properly engages children, allows for the current generations growing up in this ever-changing Paris to be more aware of their own place in the history of the city. Encouraging a demographic that is very often oblivious to their surroundings to be able to apply a new perspective to their own lives.
