Bridge 3: Annotated Bibliography Draft

  • This paper is an investigation into the effect of religious attitudes towards gender equality based on WVS data (World Values Survey). The results indicate that religion is strongly related to gender inequitable attitudes across countries. I was attracted to this article because it began by expressing that the West seems to religiously oppress women the most, which was my original thesis and area of focus.

  • This excerpt is an introduction of an analysis of misogyny and religion under Freudian ideas such as his Oedipal paradigm, death wishes for fathers and erotic desires for mothers. The text observes his Oedipal thesis as a complex before presenting a counter-thesis, an investigation into religious matriphobia and matricide and how they represent interpretations of psychological and cultural misogyny. I intend to read more of the book over the course of writing.

  • I chose this source for my thesis as it is more situation specific. Newspaper articles provide secondary information which is region and situation specific. This particular article is a documentation of a statement made by the president of the NOWFCFC (National Organization for Women Foundation Combined Federal Campaign) Toni Van Pelt, that we should “End the use of religious misogyny and homophobia to justify denying women access to birth control and abortion care.

  • I was attracted to this article because of it intrusive title, they are a series of letters to the Rev Maria Jansson of Christ Church Cathedral in Waterford, Ireland. They briefly narrate instances misogyny, bigotry and homophobia in the church while expressing that these are not the sole preserves of their faith. The last remark of the article is that these are “endemic and need naming and resisting in all their forms and hiding places.

  • The article from the Lapham’s Quarterly I believe is my most essential source in beginning my paper. The writing is an account of religious teachings being directly used to justify the same misogynistic beliefs I intend to observe in my writing. Most of the focus is on former president Jimmy Carter who left the Baptist Church after he explained the convention leaders were carefully selecting Bible verses to say women must be ‘subservient’ and are prohibited from serving as deacons, pastors, or chaplains.

  • I chose this article regardless of how informal because of its method of portrayal. This source is a media review of the misogynistic themes represented in Hulu series “The Handmaid’s Tale” and how it fails to accurately depict the terrors of modern American misogyny. “The Handmaid’s Tale” is a dystopian piece of fiction set in a society where America has been seized and sealed by a cult organization which mistreats women according to biblical interpretations. More so, the source mentions makes use of recent issues such as Trump’s Christian affiliation defending paedophilia and excusing infidelity.
