Studio/Seminar 1 Finals

My project will be tackling the hyper-exaggeration of beauty within social media. I will be creating an app, a video and a poster campaign to educate social media users, create a safe space and to help change beauty norms. The project will be focusing on the use of apps like Facetune and the use of plastic surgery and their effects on self-esteem.

The posters used in my campaign highlight the means and extremities at which people go to appear “beautiful”. These posters use the signage of apps such as Facetune and photoshop to draw commentary on the devices and their users. In addition, the use of text will help to provide commentary onto the issue. In the corner of the posters, there will be QR codes. These codes would then connect to the app Tuneface. Tuneface would include an archive of edited pictures to highlight the enormity of the issue, a storyboard where people can post their writing, and Detune. Detune would work as an application to un-edit photos. The settings would range from scar to pimple. I wanted this function of the app to represent the notion that humans are imperfect, it is in our nature. The storyboard would enable people to post their writing work in an effort to create a safe space for people who have been negatively affected by these issues.  In addition to the app and poster campaign, I will be making a video. The video will document American icons undergoing a Facetune edit. The celebrities I have chosen are Madonna, Sylvester Stallone, Donatella Versace, Kylie Jenner, and Beyonce. These models will help show that at no matter what age or how much work you have done or how beautiful you are, humans are always flawed, especially the famous.
