Artist Statement

For this last bridge project, I decided to do a documentary on my grandfather’s experience in the Vietnam War and how it affected his relationship with his family members. I decided to conduct an interview by calling him and recording his response. I also interviewed my father to get his perspective of his relationship with his grandfather. I also asked both of them what my grandfather was like after he came back from the war and whether or not there were any changes to his personality, lifestyle and, outlook in life. I wanted to portray how my grandfather was like before and after the war. I also wanted to know how he felt after the war.

Due to the fact that I only see my grandparents once or twice every year, I thought that this project was a good way to bridge my relationship with my grandfather closer. Even when I did visit them, I would always talk to my grandmother and spend time helping my grandmother.  I was really glad I got to talk to my grandfather about a specific event in his life that affected him internally and externally. Before this project, I never had the chance to talk to him about his past and his experience in the Vietnam War. While I was interviewing him there were many moments of hesitation because he was unsure if I could understand everything he was saying. My father was in the middle helping him understand the context of the question and well as help me translate my grandfathers words.

This documentary was a healing process for my relationship with my grandfather because I always feared and revered my grandfather. However, in the end he is human too who has gone through many hardships which made him lose his ability to portray certain emotions.
