Integrated Media: Narrative Self Project

(PROPOSAL

The data I’ve chosen to use is a combination of the daily information given in an astrology app called co-star as well as bits of text (which correspond to the date of specific co-star information). The concept for my zine emerged from the idea of connections; how we are always connecting with others through our phone, however something often neglected is how we connect with ourselves through the data we are feed in our phones. Therefore, I chose to elucidate these mental connections we build through data by gathering quotes that made an impact on me from the daily co-star message and combine them with bits of text found on my phone that I felt reflected the quote.

In my video I wanted to create a narrative portraying the above concept. With the 1-2 minutes of video time I decided to show the process of creating these mental connections. My video will be a scene of me in my room “mindlessly” going through the costar app and subconsciously making connections and noting important information in my head. My subconscious will be personified by a smaller version of my face that will be commenting on the information being read on costar (this will be achieved with the green screen)

FINAL CONCEPT

This zine emerged from the idea of connections. In the age of information and technology, we seem to always be connecting with others through our cellphones. However, we have been neglecting how we connect with ourselves through our data consumed. How the things we view can define how we see ourselves and interpret non-technological information.

Therefore, I decided to elucidate these cognitive relationships built through data by collecting excerpts from Co-Star’s daily chart reading (a well known astrology app), and accompanying them with bits of writing found on my phone and personal journal I felt reflected and resonated with the quote.

The reason I specifically choose Co-Star is because astrology seems to be a guide to many individuals nowadays. Its growing popularity has objectified itself in pop-culture, resulting in apps like Co-Star, which now have a dedicated cult following. Therefore, using data from an application with such power over people’s life seemed to me to be the most interesting, as it is directly tailored to you. The content, like astrology, is quite generic, however, to observe and make a mental note of what data resonates with you, and then seems to come up again in the day, can bring you more insight in to yourself than any data fed to you. This is not limited to astrology.
