First year workshop by Christian Nguyen on “Basic Carpentry Skills”

Introduction:-

This workshop introduced basic carpentry skills for the cutting, and shaping of wood. It covered general properties of wood materials, using the handsaw, the chisel, and the rasp/sanding block, how to mark you cuts and demonstration of basic wood joints.

Reflection:-

It was indeed a great learning experience. I had done a lot of wood carving and stone carving before coming to Parsons. But the key to good carving is a sharp chisel. I did not actually know how to properly take care of a chisel but now I know. As I come from a family where we work with wood a lot I knew that pine wood has beautiful grains, after the workshop I asked Christian as to how can I make the grains more visible. As I am using white pine for PROJECT #2. He agreed that polishing it or coloring it would kill the beauty of pine. He said using Tung Oil or Linseed oil will be the best option. I agree with my Space+Materiality instructor Aviva, that Christian Nguyen is a great teacher. He has great knowledge about wood. He is a professional Guitar maker. This workshop is very difficult to forget. Very interesting.
